sketchbook project

Every semester I buy a sketchbook for studio, and invariably it ends up getting filled with notes rather than drawings. If you were to flip through it, you’d get real bored real quick. This semester I splurged and bought a sassy red moleskine.

I really love it and I’ve been mulling over how to make it live up to it’s full potential. I managed to do some drawing in it, but a lot of it is still boring notes. Then I came up with this idea of collaging (which apparently isn’t a word, but collage is? whatever.) other materials on top of the boring stuff to create a palimpsest journal. My professor in Architecture 102 was obsessed with the concept of palimpsest, and it has become a crucial aspect of my design education. I have so many drawings that I don’t know what to do with, and this seemed like the perfect solution.

On Friday, I was in Anthropologie and saw this book as soon as I walked in:

1000 Artists Journal Pages

I want it. It’s so inspiring! I actually have some books like this that I got in high school. I took art all through high school, and one of the main things we were graded on was our visual journal. I was addicted to that thing. I spent a ton of time on it and each page had to be just so. Collage and mixed media was a really big thing for me in high school, and I used to get books for Christmas or my birthday by different artists.

I’m hoping to revisit the things I was studying back then, with the same enthusiasm, minus the perfectionism. Just collage stuff and then draw on top of it. I want it to be more about studying and recycling something that already has cool things in it rather than creating something with perfect, finished pages. I’m hoping to paste some in tonight so that I can sketch on the beach tomorrow! Weather permitting, of course.
