Nine weeks ago Tuesday I returned to school from winter break with the intention of losing some weight. I signed up for a 10 Mile Run and began training. Then… I hit some roadblocks. I got sick. I sprained my ankle. But this week I came back from spring break determined to eat healthier and start working out again.
As of now I have lost 5 pounds since I started. It’s not that great but overall I’m pretty happy with how it’s going. I’ve realized that I’m graduating and I don’t want to spend my last semester skipping eating at all my favorite places and hardcore dieting. However, I’ve decided to switch up my routine a little bit.
I decided that running the 10-Miler wasn’t in the cards for me this year. I’m pretty sad about it, but I only did about half the training program and I haven’t run at all in a month. The good thing about this is that it gives me more flexibility with my workouts. I had kind of used the training program as an excuse to only work out 3 times a week. I didn’t lift and weights or do any strength training. While I’m sure I burned a lot of calories on my long run, I usually came home and ate them all back afterward. Last week I worked out 4 times and hopefully I’ll do even better this week. I did the elliptical 3 times, went swimming once, and did some squats, push-ups, and ab work thrown in there too. It felt soooo good to finally work out again after my long hiatus!
I’m also focusing on my diet. I’ve pretty much stopped using Livestrong to log all of my calories. I found that I was eating things that fit the caloric number but were still bad for me more often than not. I could go days without eating vegetables and still be under the calorie limit. So instead I’m trying to be conscientious about my portions and focus on eating fresh, healthy things on a regular basis.
Before spring break my roommate sent me the link to Kath Eats, which was one of the main things that inspired me about the diet portion. I even bought oatmeal and plan to try making it next week! My roommate and I also went to Whole Foods on Thursday and picked up some snacks that I’m excited about. I hope to make it to the farmer’s market on Saturday to pick up some veggies.
At this point my goal is to lose about 5 more pounds over the next few months by implementing these changes in my diet, trying to only eat out a couple times a week (with less binging like I did this weekend!), and by exercising more. Then when I come home for the summer I can try to lose 5 to 10 more pounds depending on how successful I was at meeting the first goal. I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress!
