Art to Inspiration: Hiroshi Matsumoto

artists· inspiration· lettering· painting

1 Feb

I was SO excited to participate in a collaborative Art to Inspiration project, spearheaded by the lovely Supal of Chevrons and Eclairs!  There aren’t many rules, so I mulled it over for a long time about before I settled on what I wanted to create.  Finally I realized that I should go with what I know: sketchbook pages.  I’ve done many art reactions in my time in school and I thought it would be fun to do one for this piece.

I took a page in my sketchbook that had notes and a few drawings on it, and I layered acrylic paint, watercolor, tissue paper, and some old trace paper drawings on top.  The final layer was just a few words on my association with the artist.  In school one of my professors showed this photograph several times, and it’s simplicity stuck with me.

Below is the information for the art.  Make sure you check out Chevrons and Eclairs so that you can join in the fun!  Make sure you check out the Facebook page to see the other entries!

How interesting!! I’ve never done sketchbook pages like this before – how creative and hands-on. I’ve seen that b&w photo before too – I love how you tied it together.

When I was in college doing graphic design we had to make our own sketchbooks and fill it up with experimental drawing very similar to this. We had different types of assignments to incorporate into it. It was so much fun!

This is so beautiful and creative Kate! I like this idea a lot. I have a ton of sketch books that I leave around to doodle. Mostly trying to come up with fonts and stuff. I could definitely make it a separate bookshelf after doing this to the pages. Lovely.

What a fantastic idea Katelyn! I love how you pulled all the colours from the painting into your pages and incorporated the architecture drawings. So unique!

Thanks Jillian!  And I killed two birds with one stone by posting one sketchbook page this week, which was one of my New Year’s resolutions.  Score!
