So last week I went to Alt Summit in New York, and up until now, you haven’t heard much about it from me. Well, let me tell you- it was awesome. It was basically everything that I thought it would be and then some. I didn’t anticipate how freaking awesome it would be to just be in Martha Stewart Omnimedia. It was kind of like a dream come true.
I just don’t even know where to start! Everything was styled immaculately, as you can see, and the food was incredible. And I could do an entire post on just the business cards! But I won’t, you’ll just have to peek around the web for those!
The panels were phenomenal. Imagine sitting in class for most of the day learning about the things that you most want to learn about. That’s what this was like. Tina of Swiss Miss gave a wonderful talk on her rules for living a creative life (which Sarah kindly compiled into an infographic for everyone to enjoy!) But honestly? Might favorite thing about Tina was watching her apply Tattlys to anyone who wanted one. People would stand in line and then she would literally hold a wet paper towel to their arm and chat with them while their tatoo stuck- it was so cute! I totally regret not getting one.
The panel from Martha Stewart Living was awesome. The thing that stuck with me the most about their talk was that your point of view should always shine through everything you do. That’s what makes us unique, and that’s why people will want to stick with you. I just hadn’t thought about it that way before.
I also loved the panel on growing your community, featuring Katie Armour, Jenny Komenda, and Natalie Holbrook. I loved listening to them talk about how they got into blogging, and just share their experiences in general. Also, I’m going to get on making an editorial calendar. Jenny talked about that and how making one two-weeks out really works for her, and it’s something that I’ve really been meaning to do. I wrote in my notebook “Editorial Calendar! For realz,” so I should probably get on that. This group was also really funny when Martha walked in- it was a tough act to follow but they kept going gracefully.
Everyone there was really friendly. I was feeling off my a-game a little bit after not sleeping well for two days in a row (more on our New York trip tomorrow!) and I was definitely feeling like a little (starstruck) blogger walking around with all these big bloggers that I really admire. But everyone was super nice, and in retrospect I wish that I’d really pushed myself to meet more of the attendees. At the time, it felt like I was meeting tons of people, but then I looked at the pictures and the recaps and realized that I barely scratched the surface! And if you haven’t seen them, you’ve gotta check out the photos.
Mostly, AltNYC just made me really wish that I was going to SLC! Have you ever been to a blogger conference or meet-up? Spill!
Wow it truly sounds amazing. Love tattlys too, I ordered myself a subscription last Christmas & I’m sad that it’s done now.
Wow, that sounds amazing!! Maybe I’ll be able to go to something like that one day! I’m going to my first blogger conference next month and I am SO excited!
Ahh, this looks amazing! I wish you were coming to SLC too. :( One of these days, we’ll finally meet up!
Aaaaaaaand I just got really excited for SLC. Please stalk the internet for someone selling their ticket, ok?
I bet- I wish I could go, it sounds amazing!
Sounds like it was an incredible experience, Kate. Loved reading about your takeaways and lessons learned. Thanks for sharing!
I love your new site Katelyn! I’m so glad to hear you had an awesome time in NY! It sounds like a great opportunity to learn more about blogging and meet new friends, I wish I went!
This sounds so fun Kate! I’m so happy you got to go, and that you got something out of it. My dream is to go to Alt someday, but I didn’t get tickets for January…maybe next time! And maybe I’ll see you there? Off to check out these fantastic resources you posted about!
xoxo,
Joelle
Let’s do it- you + me, Alt 2013! :)
It was so great to meet you last week! I love your gorgeous photos.
I miss Alt NYC… let’s do it again! :)
Glad to hear you had a blast! It always seems like such an inspiring and refreshing environment to be among like-minded creatives. :) Someday, I’d love to be able to go, but I definitely can’t afford it right now. That and I need to get the ole “meeting people” anxiety under check. ;)
Was looking through the photos on Alt’s flick page the other day and I spied you in there. It certainly looks like you were having an awesome time. (That sounds totally stalker-like. Promise it isn’t! haha)

Whoa! Martha Stewart! That is too cool. Looks like it was awesome!
Fun recap! Love the photos, I spy my wild flying hair :) So nice to meet you at Alt!
I love this recap! I LOVE the heck out of Alt SLC and am so excited for January (yes, already).
Gah, I’m so jealous that you’re going to SLC! I’m putting it on my bucket list for 2013 :)
