You might recall that our trip to NYC doubled as our anniversary trip! Brian had never been to New York before, so we really tried to pack in as much stuff as we could. It was an exhausting but really fun trip!
Our trip started early on Wednesday morning. My dad was nice enough to drive us to Union Station before 6:00 in the morning! It was rough, but once we got there we saw everyone else running around, and we grabbed some snacks and felt a little better. Our bus was a double decker Megabus- we got really excited and totally ran and grabbed the front seats on the top level! We had an awesome view- I wish that we’d driven around the city a little bit more, but it seemed like once we went through the tunnel, we were at Penn Station in a flash!
We stayed in a little budget hotel in Chelsea, which wasn’t amazing but suited our needs and was perfectly located. We basically got there and hit the ground running! I didn’t take pictures the first half of the day because it was in my suitcase, but we went to the High Line first (don’t worry, we went 3 times so there are pics!) and then we ate lunch at an Italian place in Chelsea. Brian got pizza and I got French onion soup (because the people at the other table got it- and it was AMAZING!) We also split a half carafe of sangria, which was delicious.
After we checked into the hotel, we headed out on foot to do some more sightseeing in Midtown! First stop, Central Park!
We pretty much died in Central Park. Going in we had turned away all those guys who ride you around on rickshaws, and about ten minutes in we were really wishing we’d taken them up on it. We took a long break on a park bench, and then gave up and headed to Rockefeller Center before we made it too far in. I wish we’d had more time there.
Next up, we headed to Rockefeller Center, which was really cool- I’d never been there on foot before! On our way we hit up Magnolia and macked on some cupcakes (anyone? anyone?) The frosting really was the bomb.
Afterwards we headed to Times Square. People always hate on Times Square because it’s so touristy (and there are a ton of people there) but I still think it is so cool every time. We were pretty tired at that point, but we hit up Toys R Us, the Hershey store, and M&M World.{Brian’s a fan, can you tell?)
That night we hit up Shake Shack for dinner- which might have been my favorite meal of the trip, I have to say. Good thing they have this in DC! That sauce on the burger is amazing, and I need to try the cheese fries.
Thursday was Alt, so we didn’t do much sightseeing together (although Brian did a lot by himself, including the Empire State Building exactly 24 hours before there was a shooting there…) but we did hit up the High Line again in the morning on the way there, and for dinner we went to Co. (thanks for the recommendation, Clara!) I got the Popeye, which is basically pizza covered in spinach, and it was delish!
By Friday we were completely wiped, and I think I was coming down with something, so we didn’t do a ton of sightseeing that day, but we did make it to Chelsea Market and the High Line for a third time. The last thing we did was hit up Billy’s Bakery (thanks to a tip from {av}!) Isn’t it cute?! And the carrot cake cupcake was delicious, which is important. Overall, I’d have to say it was a pretty awesome little trip.
So tell me: have you ever been to NYC? Did you like it? I’ve always really enjoyed it, and Brian did too, although I think the crowds get to him a little after a while.
And no, we didn’t take any pictures together the whole trip. Aren’t we the worst?
What a great time you had! These pictures really remind me of fall in NY, when Sigurd studied in Ithaca and we used to go there for the weekends whenever I was in the States visiting him. Oh, how I miss that city during the Fall…
New York is beautiful in the fall! This was my third trip, but the last time I went was at the beginning of October.
BTW. Love your new page!
Billy’s is RIGHT NEXT TO my grandma’s apartment! she’s between that and the High Line – it’s ideal. so glad you guys had a great trip! I especially love Brian’s smile in that first picture of him :)
Uh yeah- I’d say that’s convenient :) We probably walked right by it! And I agree- he looks so excited, like they just asked him to appear on 30 Rock or something, haha.
It is SO fun for me to see pictures of people’s trips to NYC, since I live here. So many familiar sights. You especially nailed it with your visit to the Highline. It’s one of my favorite places in Manhattan…and followed by a trip to Billy’s?! Awesome.
Just started following your blog. Such fabulous design, lady!

Nice “Lazy Sunday” reference!
Incredible photos, and I love that you freshened up a first trip to New York with some fun tourist must-sees and also some fun regular things too. :) Happy belated anniversary! It looks like you had a great time, and I’m thrilled that you liked Shake Shack, the High Line, and Chelsea Market as much as I did.
Linking to you on my New York Chronicles landing page!
What great photos! I hope you guys had an amazing anniversary.
This sounds like an awesome trip! I’ve only been to NYC once, back in December of 2010. We were staying with a friend in Connecticut though, and only spent a few hours in the city. We rode the subway, went to the John Lennon memorial in Central Park, saw Times Square, Rockefeller Center (with the huuuuge Christmas tree!), visited the huge Forever 21 in Times Square and Grand Central station, and had dinner in Chinatown. We weren’t there for long enough! I would love to go back again, especially when it’s not freezing!
I bet New York at Christmas is beautiful- I’ve never been at that time! But I guess it’s nice for it to not be freezing too :)
I totally got your Magnolia reference! ;)
So glad you had a nice trip!
your new design look awesome! I love it, nice a clean cut but super cute!
Happy Anniversary trip, to you!! :) I just loved this recap – T has been to NYC a million times before, but I’ve never been. We talked about going this year for spring break, but went to Nashville instead. Maybe next fall! So glad you had fun, love. xoxo! eliza
You should totally go! This was my first trip not going with school, and afterwards I told Brian that this was something we easily could have rationalized not doing, but I was so glad we didn’t. (that probably doesn’t make sense, haha) Next time you want to take a trip, I highly recommend NYC!
That trip sounds like serious FUN! My older sister used to live there so I got to go at least two times a year and spend the weekend living off of baked goods and the best restaurants and shopping around. Unfortunately, she moved and I need a new reason to visit, i love it there so very much :)
Love these pictures, Kate! It looks like you guys had a blast in NYC. I can’t wait to go one day myself :)
Yay! So fun! I should have mentioned Billy’s too, I LOVE their cupcakes.
Looks like you had a great time! I desperately need to visit NYC again. For as close as I live, I don’t go nearly enough!
That’s how I feel about DC! I always mean to go more but I never wind up going as much as I’d like.
My sis and I were just there for BlogHer at the beginning of August and we saw alot of the same places. It’s just awesomeness there.
