Whew! We got back into town last night from a really fun but whirlwind Thanksgiving break. Anyone else feel like Thanksgiving is kind of a tease? I’m so excited to be home for Christmas! But I’m also looking forward to crackin’ down on the end of the year. So I thought we’d kick off this week with a more personal post.
When you blog about your life (which I seem to do less and less of lately) your blog acts as a kind of filter. It filters out a lot of the boring, unpretty, uncreative, or worse stuff that is not deemed “blog worthy.” Well, I thought today it would be fun to share some of the things that get filtered out. The day-to-day stuff. The unpretty stuff.
I only shower and get dressed like a normal human being every other day. On a good week.
Brian and I eat lunch and dinner in front of the TV. Complete with our own TV trays. I don’t think this is a forever thing (I mean, lunch definitely isn’t) but it works for us right now and I’m okay with it.
Related to this, Brian and I have burned through 9 seasons of Frasier on Netflix in less than 6 months. I have no regrets.
I have not framed a single wedding picture. We got married a year and three months ago. I know.
I haven’t really decorated our apartment at all. Pretty much everything was handed down to us or is stuff that we got as gifts. The space is tiny, and other than some minimal things I just haven’t been motivated to decorate it all that much.
I don’t think I’ve ever owned a real designer anything. That’s not really my MO.
I essentially don’t work out anymore. Some weeks are better than others, but… it’s just really hard for me to make time when my work to-do is always looming. I don’t have a better excuse than that.
I am horrible about making phone calls. Like really dysfunctional about it. I’m bad about keeping in touch by phone, and if it’s calling a stranger, you better believe that I will try to get out of it by any means.
What are the things that you filter out of your blog? I’d love to hear them!
Mostly, things about work are what I filter out. Partly for reasons of confidentiality, but mostly to avoid boredom. I mean, I could blog about them, but who wants to hear about a six page advice on a workers compensation claim? And, I try to leave the stuff I sound whiny about off as well. I live in a share house, but who wants to read about me having a snit because someone they’ve never heard of insists on watching the “Everybody Loves Raymond” marathon on Foxtel?
All of which is what I love about blogging. WE control the story!
Thanks for sharing that stuff, Stephen! I totally get the work thing, and I try to filter out whiny stuff too :) That “Everybody Loved Raymond” comment made me chuckle!
Kate, I love this! And those photos? Priceless!
Kate, this post is fantastic! I’m loving all of the pictures! I’m the exact same about working out and catching up on the telephone- it’s like pulling teeth! I just don’t like being on a treadmill or being on the phone, and heaven forbid if they’re put together… haha.
I CANNOT do the treadmill! I have tried, but I either feel like I’m going to fall off and kill myself or I feel like big foot running- I can’t stand it when the whole thing shakes! I bought a new running top this weekend, so that made me actually go outside and attempt a run today. Sometimes shopping is the only fix! :)
I hate the phone, too!!! cute post!
This sounds so much like James and I, it’s scary…
We burned through Fraiser and now we are on Cheers! (Bassackwards… I know but it’s how we do. lol)
xoxohannah
You’re kidding! That’s so funny- whenever we tell people that we’re watching Cheers or Frasier people give us weird looks. I’m glad we’re not the only ones taking advantage of old TV :)
OMG, we’re kindred spirits…this is so totally me, too.
Such a fun post, keepin’ it real! :)
Basically, I love you. For posts like these!
I tend to keep pictures of myself off the blog. I don’t know. I’m not a fashion blogger, in the outfit sorts, but I do blog about fashion. But not comfortable enough to post photos of my own. After reading Blog Inc, I’m kind of treading water, trying to decide what direction to go with things. I have so many ideas and would love to just do….everything, but that’s not possible. I suppose I’m mostly keeping that uncertainty off my blog and tweets, too.
I totally know what you mean! Outfit posts are daunting and I think they’re surprisingly hard! I definitely have doubts/rethink certain things about my blog/business that I usually keep to myself until I decide what I’m going to do.
umm, Katelyn. I burned through all ten seasons of Frasier in about 3 weeks…you have nothing to be ashamed of. not that I’m ashamed – I consider that quite an accomplishment. plus, based on how awesome Frasier is, you can bet those were a happy and joyful three weeks. :)
Whoa! I respect that. Isn’t it awesome? I’ll be so sad when we’re finished!
I too eat my meals in front of the tv. Shower every other day. And I have been known to watch an entire season of something in a weekend! ie Dexter, Hart of Dixie (guilty pleasure), etc. :)
We definitely have a few commonalities! I detest making phone calls, especially to strangers and it drives my husband nuts. We also eat in front of the TV, I shower every other day and wash my hair only twice a week. In addition, my blog doesn’t really show the countless hours I spend on the couch watching TV, on the computer or reading.
My husband and I started watching Frasier a few weeks ago! So fun! We’ll see if we can finish in 6 months. What a lengthy commitment :). A lot of bloggers talk about being authentic, and unfiltered, but your post really nailed it. Thanks Katelyn!
You and I are seriously the same!!! haha I love it! I want to do a post like this now :D
Do it! It was really fun :)
This is brilliant!
James and I always eat in front of the tv too. But then again, our place is so small we have NO room for even the tiniest of tables. And I LOVE Fraiser! So hilarious. Don’t even talk to me about the phone. I have so much anxiety related to phone calls, unless it’s to someone I regularly talk to on the phone, which is about 3 people haha.
I might have to steal this idea :)
I hear ya… our table doubles as Brian’s desk and is in a really awkward place for more than one person to sit, so… we don’t. And I’m the same way, I have like 3 or 4 people that I regularly call and I don’t really care as much about it then! Go for it- it was really fun :)
I only filter my comments since I do not currently own a blog. I bid on a couple on ebay but lost out. I don’t always do a good job of filtering my comments though; or checking to see if I had the write word or not. :) Sometimes I misspel stuff and don’t catch it till after I pushed that big fat button. The upper right picture was certainly blog worthy and I understand the others not making the cut unless you wanted to convey a feeling that top left and bottom right seem to do very well. Someone please help me as I try to use the word quite or quiet as I wanted to for the word very in the previous sentence. I would have had to take time to google both words to see which one I had had in my head for that sentence but since I did not have time to do so I exchanged and put very there. I hate when I have to do that when I write. The fact that my spelling vocabulary does not match my thinking vocabulary. I’m done.
Wait… are you saying that you bid on blogs on Ebay? I’ve heard of that, but I never knew someone who did it! What’s stopping you from just starting a new one? And I’m with ya- I have to Google stuff all the time!
I was joking about bidding on a blog. :) Just trying to make you laugh. Did you catch the write and misspel references too?? :)
haha okay okay, I gotcha :) Yes sir, I did!
If I ever do get a blog I know who I am going to get to help design it! :)
:)
Great post! I think we might be twins, haha.
As for what I filter out, where do I begin? I filter out how boring and uneventful my life is, as well as the drama, anything super personal, info relating to friends/family, pictures of myself, friends, or family, and anything work related. I’d love to write more about my life, but I don’t want to put too much identifying info out there and I don’t want to write about something that I’d later regret. I know that makes my blog less personal, but there’s a fine line between just personal enough and too personal. I guess I’m trying to figure it out!
You are so hilarious! I love this post and these pictures. I swear, with you liking West Wing and Fraiser, my hubby might leave me for you! haha. ;)
I love the idea of being unfiltered. So fun! We eat in front of the TV a lot too. It’s mostly because I can’t seem to keep all the crap off our kitchen table.
Awesome post! I love the unfiltered photos. So funny!
I live alone so luckily I can sit in front of the TV and eat dinner or stay in my pj’s all day on the weekend and no one knows (till now). I do have a dining table but the couch is comfier :-)
I also cannot stand phone calls. I do everything I can do avoid them. It also took me ages to learn to properly jog on the treadmill, it felt so unsafe.
